Life in Lyon - Europe's best-kept secret...

We’re now a full two weeks into our Lyon stay, and enjoying it immensely. You’ll have to get a crowbar to pry me out of here! Of course I WILL be back in Portland for our tasting events on Oct. 12 & 13 at the warehouse, and I really look forward to seeing you there.

I’ve got killer flights lined up for both days. On Saturday, we’ll start off with the new Caveau Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs in MAGNUMS, and roll into some Laherte Frères, Sophie Cossy, Marion-Bosser, Janisson-Baradon, and more goodies. Sunday will be Burgundy day, with treats from Albert Joly, Domaine Thibert, J-J Confuron, A-F Gros and more on tap - with some surprises in store each day as well - should be epic!

The quality of life here in Lyon is exceptional - very much like Portland in that it’s a big enough city (like PDX, about 2 million all together) to have everything you need and want, but not too big to have all the stress and hassle that go with NY or Paris or a larger metropolis. We have no car, walk or metro everywhere (clean, safe, no strikes yet!) and right outside out door we have literally hundreds of great cafés, restaurants, bakeries within a few minutes. We run most mornings on the paths along the banks of the Rhône, and often continue up into the Parc de la Tête d’Or - the most beautiful city park I could ever imagine. We’re running in the Run In Lyon Marathon/Half-Marathon/10K on Sunday - will let you know how it all went down…

With all the grapes now off the vines and fermenting away in the wineries, both Burgundians and Champenois are celebrating a potentially excellent vintage. Each region had challenges over the course of the season, but ended up delivering nice crops of superb quality. A year from now, we’ll start to have a real idea what ’19 is all about.

In the meantime, after I get back from seeing you all in Portland, we’ll be making the rounds of our producers throughout the fall to get out first quality look at the ‘18s, which by all accounts are pretty marvelous - perhaps one of the all-time greats in Champagne. Stay tuned for all the action to come!
