A few parting thoughts from Burgundy

It feels more like fall here than spring or summer - lots of grey, moody skies, cold and damp - on every level this has been one miserable year so far in terms of weather for the vineyards. There is precious little potential crop out there, which could still be of excellent quality - but we're gonna need some sunshine and warmth at some point!

One of my favorite Burgundy vintages of all time is 1945. It started with a killer frost on May 1st (WWII ended just days later on May 8th), and produced a miniscule crop of amazing quality, so maybe we're headed that way again... No matter what happens, it's not going to be easy. Almost everywhere there are vines that are 3-4 weeks behind others due to the frost - harvest may have to be done in two passes this fall...

I always try to spend a little quiet time in my "happy place" before I leave here. Martha knows this is where I want my ashes scattered when my time comes - on the path between Musigny and les Amoureuses,  up on the hillside overlooking the Chateau de Vougeot. It's a very peaceful, spiritual, contemplative spot. You can feel the gentle power of the terroir, hear the voice of the land, feel the current running through the vines. The best time is in the early evening - all of the vineyard crews are done for the day, and it's just you and the dirt and the wall and the vines...

I'm so excited to be reuniting with my girls tomorrow, and for our vacation in Sweden, but always a touch sad to be leaving here. I'll be back again for harvest (which is looking like early October, at this point), and again in late November for two more rounds of filming for Three Days of Glory. There's a primitive website up for the film, which we'll flesh-out with some clips and a teaser-trailer when I get back home...
