What an amazing week...

Our annual Insider's Tour of Burgundy has just wrapped up, and it was another stellar week of intense tasting, eating, tasting, eating, and tasting - followed up by a trip to the Beaune Saturday market to pick up supplies for more eating. I will now need to run a marathon every week to have any shot of not turning into a large disc of softly oozing Époisses...

Two great tastings yesterday - first with Alain Meunier and Sophie Meunier-Confuron at J-J Confuron - lord, the '15s are beautiful. There was a stunned silence in the cellar when the Romanée-St. Vivant was in our glasses - a compelling and amazing young wine as one could ever hope to encounter. Nobody could bring themselves to spit the RSV. "On crache à l'interieur" - we spit on the inside...

Then I took the group for a tour of the Chateau de Vougeot and a walking tour of the Grand Crus of Vosne-Romanée, followed by a quick drive back down the RN74 to Pommard and a final tasting with Thierry Violot-Guillemard. There is not a bigger character, a better winemaker, or a finer person around - the group was enthralled as we tasted through the cellar and several older vintages.

We then poured ourselves out onto the streets of Beaune, just in time to hear the crowds in the cafés erupt when France scored the winning goal against Roumania in the last minute of the opening match of the Euros tournament in Paris.  What a great night indeed!
