Tasting, eating, tasting...

We kicked off the day with a great tasting in the cellar with Alexandrine Roy in Gevrey-Chambertin. Her '14s in barrel are totally gorgeous - there's a beautiful richness and purity. Cannot wait for these bottles next year..

We lunched at Castel Tres Girard in Morey-St. Denis, poolside on a bright sunny afternoon. Had a nice '08 Chambolle from JJ Confuron and an '11 Vosne-Romanée Combe Brulée from Bruno Clavelier - both drinking very nicely...

I then took the group for a walking tour of the Grand Crus of the Côte de Nuits, pausing to genuflect and pay hommage to Musigny, Richebourg, RSV, Romanée-Conti and La Tâche before heading down to Meursault for a standout tasting in the cellar with Patrick Essa at Buisson-Charles.

They lost 50% of their crop to hail in 2014, but fortunately what remained made stunning wines. Plush and flat-out delicious, with a beautiful underlying tension and minerality that could only come from Meursault. Patrick often pulls out an older bottle or two, and this time it was a '98 Goutte d'Or (captivating), and a '90 Charmes (riveting, in a word.) And then he sent us off with a magnum of '07 Bouches-Chères, which we'll drink with lunch in the Clos du Colombier vineyard with Thiébault Huber later today...

Dinner was a 7-course extravaganza at Auprès du Clocher in Pommard, which has been one of my favorite tables in Burgundy for a number of years now. Chef Jean-Christophe never fails to dazzle the senses. '11 Buisson-Charles Bouches-Chères, '07 d'Angerville Champans, and '96 de Vogüé Chambolle were all not too hard to swallow. We're off to a fairly good start :-)
