Wrap-up from Burgundy...

Another Insider's Tour of Burgundy has come to an end, and it was a stellar week, as always. I think this year's group had a massively great time, learned a ton, and were blown away by the warm welcome and generosity of our producers and friends up and down the Côte. They tasted more Grand Crus in a week than most had in their lifetimes, and came away with a deeper love, respect, and understanding of Burgundy than ever before. Oh, and they ate and drank fairly well too..

The kindness and generosity of our Burgundian producers never ceases to amaze. People sampling wines for us of which they produced only one barrel. Pouring samples of their Grand Crus that they typically never open for consumers. Pulling old bottles out of their cellars for us from the 50s and 60s. Even if you weren't a Burgundy geek before the tour, you likely became one after. I am deeply thankful to Thiébault Huber at Huber-Verdereau, Kate and Patrick Essa at Buisson-Charles, Alexandrine Roy, Thierry Violot-Guillemard, Christophe and Sandrine Thibert, Fabio Gazeau-Montrasi at Chateau des Rontets, Alain and Sophie Meunier-Confuron at J-J Confuron, François Parent at A-F Gros, Jean-Nicolas Meo, and Jean-Luc Pepin  and the inimitable François Millet at Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé. It was a rockin' good week...

A few bottles with dinner at Ma Cuisine

A few bottles with dinner at Ma Cuisine

Our grand finale dinner Friday night was at Ma Cuisine in Beaune, with proprietor Pierre in fine form and the food and wine flowing beautifully. The '07 Fremiets in Magnum was stellar, the '07 Chevalier pure elegance, and the '64 Pommard a fascinating study in secondary and tertiary aromas and flavors that show one why cellaring wine for a long time is a good idea. Flat-out gorgeous...

Our farewell casse-croute in the Clos du Colombier

Our farewell casse-croute in the Clos du Colombier

Saturday morning i took the crew to the market in Beaune. It was a perfect sunny summer morning, the market was packed and bustling, and of course I ran into nearly everybody we know here (the whole world goes to the Saturday market in Beaune, It's as much a social event as anything.) We picked up some great cheeses, charcuterie, rilletes, breads and chocolates, and took it all back to the the Clos du Colombier vineyard for our farewell lunch before the group took off on their travels.

I am incredibly honored to call François Millet a friend. The legendary poet-philosopher-winemaker of Dom. de Vogüé in Chambolle-Musigny makes some of the finest wines on the planet, but there's so much more to the man. I come away from every encounter with him richer for the experience, and more open to understanding the magic of wine and terroir. I was invited to Saturday dinner at his home last night with his wife Michelle, son Julien and girlfriend Mathilde, and a few bottles of our dear friend Musigny. It's not often I have three vintages of Musigny with dinner, to say the least! What a memorable night. Merci François!

On the way to François's house, I stopped for a few minutes to sit in the de Vogüé parcel of Les Amoureuses, just to contemplate the spirit of that magical terroir. Martha has specific instructions to scatter my ashes there when the time comes. It's my happy-place...
