Tearing it up on the Côte de Beaune...

What a rockin' great day on the Côte. First stop - Domaine Huber-Verdereau in Volnay, where Thiébault led the group through a great tasting of his 2014s in barrel. Unbelievably generous - in that he lost about 80% of his crop to the hailstorm last year, and made only 1 barrel each of his 1er Crus! I actually begged him not to sample us on those, but he insisted. And god, they were good.

He then laid out a great spread of charcuterie and cheeses for lunch right in his Clos du Colombier vineyard in Pommard, and finished up with a surprise bottle of his 1993 Pommard - the first wine he ever made! (Interesting that he does not consider it his first, however, as he didn't farm the vineyards in '93. He took over farming in '94, and considers that his first vintage. In '93 he was just "vinifying someone else's grapes".

After all these years I am still blown away by the generosity and the spirit of sharing that comes from all of our vignerons here. We headed over to see Thierry Violot-Guillemard in his cellar in Pommard, where he has lost 70-100% of his production, depending on vineyard, for the last three years in a row. Despite all of that, he remains upbeat, funny, and one of the great characters in the world of wine. And his wines absolutely rock with purity and finesse.

"Would you like to try something a little older. perhaps?" - My favorite question ever, of course. Out came Thierry from the bowels of his cellar with a bottle of '69 Rugiens - a wine so sublime it produced an out-of-body experience. As we drove away to head to Montrachet, we could still taste the '69 15 minutes down the road...

Then we were off on a walking tour of the legendary Grand Crus of the Côte de Beaune. It's always amazing for people to see with their own eyes up close the distinct differences in soils and slops and exposition that make Montrachet, Chevaliers and Bâtard unique and different.

Excellent dinner last night in Beaune at 21 Blvd. - capped off by an exquisite bottle. No words can really capture the seamlessness of a beauty like this...

And now we're off for a day in the Mâconnais. More as it happens...
