Greetings from Volnay...

I have arrived without incident, to the sound of the ancient church bells here in my tiny village of Volnay. Big news here - the bakery has finally sold. Bad news, it will not be a bakery anymore. A couple from the Côte Chalonniase has bought it and will be opening up an Italian restaurant in the space next spring. So I still had to hoof it into Pommard this morning for my baguette (which is better than it was in recent months - bravo to the baker in Pommard!)

I'll be running the Beaune half-marathon on Saturday - so I hit the vineyard roads for a quick 5-miler yesterday afternoon after getting in to Beaune to pick up supplies for the house. It does help with the jet-lag, I think. At any rate, I collapsed into a 10-hour sleep last night at 8pm and am feeling pretty chipper this morning.

French breakfast - my happy place...

French breakfast - my happy place...

I just missed by one day a huge party for Thiébault Huber's parents' 50th wedding anniversary. It looks like the celebrated in style - including this nice 6-liter bottle of Volnay, which is now very empty...

Speaking of Domaine Huber-Verdereau, their new winery is nearing completion - Thiébault says he'll be moved in to the new place in Meursault in December. You have to remember that a new winery facility does not happen very often in these parts, like basically never. It's one of the featured news stories in the new issue of Bourgogne Aujourd'Hui. I'm looking forward to a tour of the new place later this week...

I'll be spending the day up in the Côte de Nuits - first tasting at de Vogüé in Chambolle, then to J-J Confuron in Premeaux, then up to Gevrey to taste with Alexandrine Roy and lunch at the Rotisserie, and then a potential new producer that cannot yet be revealed. Here we go! Stay tuned...
